A rep for Scarlet Johansson has promised that legal action will be taken against Cosmopolitan U.K., whose January 2009 cover story on Johansson was apparently an “obvious attempt…to gain monetarily by misinforming their readers.”


ScarJo’s rep said that the quotes in the article about Johansson’s marriage to Ryan Reynolds were “wholly fabricated” and that she “has at no point granted U.K. Cosmopolitan an interview, and she has never discussed her personal relationships with the publication.”

Where were the fact-checkers on this one, Cosmo?

There are three things that really stuck with me from first-year News Reporting:
1) Don’t use “it was a parent’s worst nightmare” leads
2) CP Style Guide is your best friend
3) Don’t make shit up. Ever. Because you will eventually get caught (Stephen Glass, anyone?)
